How it works

Most short-form video is watched with the sound off, so subtitles are no longer optional. Doing it by hand means transcribing, timing and then burning in. This does all three, and unlike every service that offers the same thing, the footage never leaves your machine.

It is slow, in two stages

First the speech model transcribes the audio on your own processor — roughly the length of the clip again, plus a one-off 41 MB model download. Then the video is re-encoded with the subtitles drawn in, which takes about as long once more. A one-minute clip is a few minutes of waiting. That is the honest cost of not uploading it.

Why they are burned in

Social platforms strip separate subtitle tracks, so captions that must survive being posted have to be part of the picture. That also means they cannot be corrected afterwards — which is why the .srt is offered as well.

Check before you publish

Automatic transcription misreads accents, proper nouns, technical terms and anything said over background noise, and the timings are approximate. If the result is not right, take the .srt option, correct it in any text editor, and use the subtitle burner here to apply the fixed version.

English only

This uses the small English Whisper model, chosen because larger and multilingual ones are hundreds of megabytes and would be impractical in a browser.

FAQ

Automatic subtitles — questions

How long does it take?

Several minutes for a short clip: transcription takes about the length of the clip, then re-encoding takes about as long again.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Both the transcription and the encoding happen on your device.

The subtitles have mistakes — can I fix them?

Yes. Choose to get the .srt as well, correct it, and apply it with the subtitle burner.

Which languages does it handle?

English only. Multilingual models are far too large for a browser.
