How it works
Word documents are the files people most often need as PDFs and are also among the most sensitive things they own — contracts, applications, medical letters, references. Every free converter asks you to upload one. This reads the document in the page and builds the PDF there.
What is preserved
The text, as real selectable text rather than a picture. Headings at their relative sizes, bold and italic, bulleted and numbered lists including nesting, tables with their grid, images, and horizontal rules. The result is searchable, copyable and small.
What is not — said plainly
This rebuilds the document rather than reproducing it pixel for pixel. Fonts become Helvetica, because a PDF has to embed a font and your document's may not be available or redistributable. Columns, text boxes, headers, footers, page numbers, exact line spacing and precise positioning are not carried over. Where a document must look exactly as it does in Word — a designed letterhead, a formatted CV, anything going to a printer — use Word's own Save as PDF, which has the original fonts and layout engine.
When this is the right tool
Reports, letters, notes, drafts, essays and anything text-led where the content matters more than the typography — particularly when the document is confidential enough that uploading it to a converter is not something you want to do.
.doc is not .docx
The older binary .doc format is completely different and cannot be read here. Open it in Word or LibreOffice and save as .docx first.
Word to PDF — questions
Will the PDF look exactly like my Word document?
No. The text, headings, lists, tables and images are preserved, but fonts become Helvetica and precise layout is not reproduced. For an exact match use Word's own Save as PDF.
Is the text still selectable?
Yes. It is written as real text, so the PDF stays searchable and copyable.
Can it convert .doc files?
No, only .docx. The older format is entirely different — re-save it as .docx first.
Is my document uploaded?
No. It is read and converted entirely in your browser.
