How it works
Muting a clip is usually about what is on the soundtrack rather than the soundtrack itself: background conversation in a screen recording, music that would trip a copyright filter, wind noise ruining otherwise good footage. It is a small job, and one where the file has no business being uploaded to a stranger.
Nothing is re-encoded
The audio track is dropped and the video track is copied across bit for bit. That means it is fast — seconds rather than minutes — and the picture quality is identical to the original, because no encoder ever touches it.
Muting is not the same as lowering the volume
The track is removed from the file entirely, not silenced. Nobody can recover it from the result, which is the point when the audio contained something you did not want shared.
What comes back
An MP4, or a WebM if you started with one, with a video track and no audio track. Players and upload forms handle silent video perfectly well.
If you wanted to keep the audio
Use the video-to-MP3 conversion instead, which does the opposite: it throws the picture away and keeps the sound.
Remove the audio from a video — questions
Does removing the audio reduce the video quality?
No. The picture is copied without being re-encoded, so it is identical to the original.
Can the audio be recovered from the muted file?
No. The track is removed from the file, not merely silenced.
Why is this so much faster than the other video tools?
Because nothing is re-encoded. Only the container is rewritten.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Everything happens inside your browser.
