How it works
A slug is the readable part of a URL. Good ones are lowercase, hyphenated, free of punctuation and stable — because changing a slug after publication breaks every link pointing at it.
What gets stripped
Accented characters are reduced to plain equivalents, punctuation and symbols are removed, and runs of anything non-alphanumeric collapse into a single separator. Leading and trailing separators are trimmed.
Hyphen or underscore
Hyphens are the web convention and are what search engines treat as word separators. Underscores are more common in filenames. On the web, use hyphens.
The rules it follows
Text is lower-cased, accents are removed by separating each letter from its accent mark (é becomes e, ñ becomes n), every run of anything other than a–z and 0–9 becomes a single separator, and separators at the start and end are trimmed.
Its limits
Only the Latin alphabet survives. Letters with no plain form — ß, æ, ø, ł — and whole scripts such as Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic or Chinese are removed, so a title written in them can come out empty. For those, a transliterated title or a short ID makes a better slug.
Slug generator — questions
Does it handle accented characters?
Yes. Characters such as e-acute and u-umlaut are reduced to e and u rather than removed.
Should I change a slug after publishing?
Avoid it. Every existing link to the old slug breaks unless you add a redirect.
Is my text uploaded?
No, the slug is generated in the page.
