How it works

Phones record orientation as a flag rather than by rotating the picture, and plenty of software ignores that flag. The result is footage that looks fine on the phone and sideways everywhere else. Rotating the picture itself fixes it for good.

Flag versus picture

Many tools only flip an orientation flag in the file's metadata, which some players honour and others ignore. This re-encodes the video with the frames actually rotated, so there is nothing left to misinterpret.

Mirroring is different from rotating

Mirror left-to-right is what you want for selfie footage that reads backwards. It is not a rotation and cannot be achieved by one — text in a mirrored clip will read backwards, which is expected.

It re-encodes, so it takes time

Every frame is redrawn. The soundtrack is copied across untouched, so only the picture costs anything.

Quality

The video is re-encoded once at a high quality setting. The loss is negligible on a single pass, though it is not free — rotating repeatedly would accumulate.

FAQ

Rotate a video — questions

Will the rotation stick when I upload the video elsewhere?

Yes. The frames themselves are rotated rather than a flag being set, so nothing can ignore it.

Does it re-encode the audio?

No. The soundtrack is copied across untouched.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The rotation runs in your browser.

Why does mirrored text read backwards?

Because mirroring genuinely reverses the picture. If you wanted the frame turned rather than flipped, choose one of the rotations.
