How it works
Writers repeat themselves without noticing. Counting the words is the quickest way to find the crutch phrase you have used nine times, and it doubles as a rough keyword check on a page you are editing.
Filler words
By default very common words such as the, and and of are ignored, because they dominate any count and tell you nothing. Include them if you are analysing style rather than subject.
How words are counted
Text is lowercased and split on anything that is not a letter, digit or apostrophe, so contractions stay whole and punctuation does not create false entries.
What counts as a word
A word is a run of letters or digits in any alphabet — English, accented Latin, Cyrillic, Greek and others — with apostrophes kept, so “don't” is one word. Everything is lower-cased first, so “The” and “the” are counted together.
Filler words
When filler words are ignored, 26 very common English words are left out of the list: the, a, an, and, or, but, of, to, in, on, at, for, with, is, are, was, were, be, been, it, its, this, that, as, by and from. The list is English only, so common words in other languages are still counted.
How the list is built
Words are listed from most to least frequent, ties in alphabetical order, up to the top 200. The total counts every word in the text; the distinct count leaves out filler words when they are ignored.
