How it works

Bank statements, invoices, price lists and reports arrive as PDFs and are needed as spreadsheets. It is one of the most requested conversions there is, and also one of the least reliable — worth understanding why before you trust the output.

How the columns are found

A PDF has no idea it contains a table. It knows only that a piece of text sits at a particular position. This tool groups text into rows by vertical position and into columns by where each piece starts horizontally. On a cleanly laid out table that reconstructs the grid accurately.

Where it goes wrong

Merged cells, text that wraps onto a second line inside a cell, multiple tables on one page, and columns that are not consistently aligned all confuse a position-based approach. The result will be recognisable but will need tidying. If that sounds unsatisfying, it is worth knowing that the paid converters solve this with heuristics that also get it wrong, just differently.

Column detection setting

Tight treats small horizontal gaps as column boundaries, which suits dense tables with many narrow columns. Loose merges more, which suits wide, sparse layouts. If the output has everything crammed into one column, loosen it; if it is scattered across too many, tighten it.

Numbers arrive as numbers

Values that are entirely numeric are written as numbers rather than text, so totals and sorting work immediately without re-typing anything.

FAQ

PDF to Excel — questions

How accurate is it?

Good on cleanly laid out tables, poor on merged cells, wrapped text or several tables per page. Always check the result.

Everything landed in one column — what now?

Switch column detection to tight, which treats smaller gaps as boundaries.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

No. A scan has no text to position. Use the scanned PDF to text tool first.

Is my document uploaded?

No. It is processed in your browser.
