How it works
A border separates a picture from whatever it is placed on. It is what makes a white product photo visible on a white page, what gives a set of images a consistent look, and what turns a snapshot into something that reads as a print.
It adds rather than crops
The border is drawn around the original, so the result is larger and nothing in the picture is lost. A 4% border on a 1000-pixel-wide photo adds about 40 pixels to each side.
Width is a percentage, on purpose
Because it is proportional, a batch of differently sized pictures all come out looking consistent. A fixed pixel width would look heavy on a small image and invisible on a large one.
Polaroid style
The polaroid option makes the bottom edge three times the others, leaving room to write a caption underneath, the way an instant print looks. White is the conventional colour for it.
Several at once
Add a batch and they all receive the same border, which is the point when preparing a set for a gallery or a listing.
Add a border to an image — questions
Does the border crop my picture?
No. It is added around the outside, so the result is larger and nothing is lost.
Why is the width a percentage?
So a batch of different-sized pictures comes out looking consistent.
Can I do several images at once?
Yes. They all get the same border.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The border is drawn in your browser.
