How it works

A GIF is the format you reach for when something has to play automatically in a chat, a bug report or a document that cannot hold a video. The catch is that GIF is a fundamentally inefficient format, and most converters hide the settings that decide whether you get a 400 KB file or a 40 MB one.

Why GIFs get so big

GIF stores frames as images with no real inter-frame compression, so file size grows with every frame and every pixel. A five-second clip at 480 px and 12 frames per second is usually a few hundred kilobytes. The same clip at 640 px and 20 frames per second can be five times that. The three settings here are exactly the three that matter.

Choosing settings

Start with 480 px and 12 frames per second, which reads as smooth enough for almost everything. Drop to 320 px or 8 frames per second if the file has to be small. Go to 20 frames per second only for fast motion where the judder would be distracting.

Colour is limited to 256

That is a limitation of the GIF format itself, not this tool. Photographic footage and smooth gradients will show banding. Screen recordings, illustrations and anything with flat colour convert beautifully.

Length is capped at 30 seconds

Beyond that the frames alone exhaust the browser's memory, and the resulting file would be rejected by most places you would want to post it anyway.

FAQ

Turn a video into a GIF — questions

Why is my GIF so large?

GIF has no real compression. Reduce the width, the frame rate or the length — each one cuts the size substantially.

Can I convert a whole video to a GIF?

Only up to 30 seconds. Past that the file becomes unusable and the browser runs out of memory.

Does it have a watermark?

No. Nothing is added to the image.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser.
