Hash generator

Produce a SHA hash of any text, using the browser built-in crypto.

Hash generator Runs on your device
  • Runs in your browser — your text is never sent anywhere
  • No sign-up, no quotas, free to use as often as you like

How it works

A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of an input. The same input always produces the same hash, and any change to the input changes it completely. Hashes are how you verify that data has not been altered.

Hashing is one-way

There is no way to turn a hash back into the original text. That is the point. Tools claiming to reverse a hash are looking the value up in a table of pre-computed common inputs, not reversing anything.

Which algorithm to pick

SHA-256 is the sensible default. SHA-1 is offered because older systems still emit it, but it is considered broken for security purposes and should not be chosen for anything new.

FAQ

Hash generator — questions

Can I decode a hash back to text?

No. Hashing is deliberately one-way.

Is SHA-1 safe to use?

Not for security. Practical collision attacks exist. Use SHA-256 or better for anything new.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. It is hashed by the browser own Web Crypto implementation.
