How it works
Most converters make you choose a unit to convert from and another to convert to, then give you one number. Usually you want to see several at once — to sanity-check a figure, or because you are not sure which unit the other person meant. This converts your amount into every unit in the category at the same time.
Exact factors
Conversions use the internationally agreed definitions, which are exact rather than approximate: an inch is exactly 25.4 millimetres, a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, a mile is exactly 1609.344 metres. The results are therefore correct to the precision shown, not rounded approximations of an approximation.
Temperature works differently
Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin do not share a zero point, so they cannot be converted with a simple multiplication like the others. Because of that, temperature shows what your figure means when read as each of the three scales.
US and UK measures are not the same
A US gallon is about 3.79 litres and a UK gallon about 4.55 — a 20% difference that ruins recipes and fuel calculations alike. Pints differ too. Both are listed separately for exactly this reason.
Data units
These use the binary convention, where a kilobyte is 1024 bytes. Storage manufacturers use the decimal convention, where it is 1000, which is why a drive sold as 1 TB shows up as roughly 931 GB on your computer.
Unit converter — questions
Are the conversion factors exact?
Yes. They use the internationally agreed exact definitions rather than rounded approximations.
Why is the US gallon different from the UK one?
They are genuinely different measures — about 3.79 litres against 4.55. Both are listed so you can pick the right one.
Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?
This converter uses binary units, where a kilobyte is 1024 bytes, while drives are sold in decimal units where it is 1000.
Is anything I enter sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in the page.
