How it works
Watermarking video is about attribution: footage posted where it will be reposted, a proof sent to a client, a clip you would like credited when it travels. The free tools that do it usually stamp their own logo alongside yours, which rather defeats the exercise.
It is burned in, not overlaid
The text becomes part of every frame rather than a separate track, so it survives re-encoding, re-uploading and format conversion. That also means it cannot be undone — keep your original.
Placement and opacity
A corner mark is the convention for a credit line and stays out of the way of the subject. Centred is more of a deterrent and harder to crop out. Opacity trades visibility against how much of the picture it obscures; around 70% reads clearly without dominating.
Only the picture is re-encoded
The soundtrack is copied across untouched, so audio quality is unaffected and the job is quicker than a full re-encode of both streams. The text itself is drawn on your own device using the fonts already installed there, then composited into each frame.
What it protects against
It makes the source obvious when a clip is reposted and deters casual reuse. It is not security: someone determined can crop or blur it. A corner mark is the easiest to remove, which is the trade for it being the least intrusive.
Watermark a video — questions
Will this site add its own branding?
No. Only the text you type appears.
Can the watermark be removed?
Not by re-saving the file, because it is part of the picture. Cropping or blurring can still obscure it, as with any visible watermark.
Does it re-encode the audio?
No. The soundtrack is copied across untouched.
Is my video uploaded?
No. It is watermarked in your browser.
