How it works

Watermarking is how you hand a picture over without handing it away — a proof sent to a client, a photo posted where it will be scraped, a scanned document marked DRAFT so nobody mistakes it for the final one. There is an obvious irony in uploading such a picture to a stranger's server to get it marked. Here it never leaves your device, and the only text on the result is yours.

Placement that matches the purpose

Angled across the middle is the classic proofing mark: hard to crop out, easy to read through. Tiled covers the whole frame, which is what you want if the picture is likely to be cropped. The corner positions stay out of the way when the mark is a credit line rather than a deterrent. Centred is for stamps like DRAFT or SAMPLE.

Size, opacity and colour

Size is set as a share of the picture's width, so the mark looks the same on a small thumbnail and a large original. Opacity trades protection against how much of the picture you can still see — around a third is the usual compromise. White reads on dark photographs, dark red reads on documents.

The preview is the output

The preview and the saved file are drawn by the same code, at the same proportions, so the result holds no surprises. The picture is stamped at full original resolution; only the preview is scaled down to fit the page.

What a watermark can and cannot do

It deters casual reuse and makes the source obvious when an image is passed around. It is not security: a determined person with an editor can remove one, especially a corner mark on a plain background. Angled and tiled marks across the subject are much harder to remove convincingly.

FAQ

Watermark an image — questions

Will this site add its own watermark?

No. The only text on the result is the text you typed. There is no branding, no logo and no sign-up.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. It is decoded, stamped and re-encoded by your own browser. Nothing is transmitted.

Can I use a logo image instead of text?

Not yet — this tool stamps text. A logo overlay is a different job and is not offered here rather than being offered badly.

Does the watermark reduce the image quality?

The picture is re-encoded once when it is saved, so a JPEG loses a small amount as it always does on re-encoding. PNGs are lossless and lose nothing.
