How it works

Flipping is most often about selfies. Front cameras mirror the preview and then save the unmirrored version, so the photo looks subtly wrong compared with the face you are used to seeing. It is also how you fix scanned film, make a design face the other way, or produce a mirrored copy for a print process.

Horizontal is the one you usually want

Left to right is the mirror flip — the one that fixes a selfie or turns a subject to face the other way. Vertical is a top-to-bottom flip, which is rarer and mostly used for reflections and for scans that came out upside down.

The flip is written into the file

Some tools only set an orientation flag, which viewers can ignore. Here the pixels themselves are rearranged, so the image looks the same everywhere it is opened.

Several at once

Add a batch and they are all flipped the same way, then handed back individually. Useful for a folder of scans that all came out mirrored.

Quality

The pixels are rearranged, not resampled, so a flip loses nothing. A JPEG is re-encoded once when it is saved, which costs a negligible amount; a PNG is lossless and costs nothing at all.

FAQ

Flip an image — questions

Does flipping reduce quality?

No. The pixels are rearranged rather than resampled. JPEGs are re-encoded once, which is negligible.

Will the flip show up everywhere?

Yes. The image data itself is changed, not just an orientation flag that some viewers ignore.

Can I flip several images at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like and they are all flipped the same way.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
