How it works

Shifting pitch without changing speed is what separates a voice changer from simply playing a recording fast. It is used to disguise a voice, to move a backing track into a singable key, and to make a narration sit better against music.

Semitones, not percentages

Pitch is measured in semitones because that is how music works: twelve semitones is exactly one octave, a doubling or halving of frequency. Two semitones is a subtle shift; four is clearly a different voice; twelve is dramatic and obviously processed.

How it works, and why it is not perfect

The audio is resampled to move the pitch, which also changes the speed, and then time-stretched back to the original duration. That second step is an approximation, so large shifts introduce a warbling artefact on sustained sounds. Small shifts are essentially clean.

Disguising a voice

A shift of four to seven semitones changes a voice recognisably, but it is not anonymisation — the rhythm, accent and phrasing survive, and the shift can be reversed by anyone who applies the opposite amount. Treat it as a disguise, not as protection.

Music

Shifting a whole track moves it to a different key while keeping the tempo, which is the point for singers and for matching two pieces of music. Beyond a few semitones instruments start to sound artificial.

FAQ

Change audio pitch — questions

Will the speed change too?

No. The speed is restored after the pitch shift, which is what makes this a voice changer rather than fast playback.

Does it make me anonymous?

No. Rhythm, accent and phrasing survive, and the shift can be reversed. It is a disguise, not protection.

Why does a large shift sound warbly?

Time-stretching back to the original duration is an approximation, and the artefacts grow with the size of the shift.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. It is processed in your browser.
