GIF to WebP

How it works
This is the conversion that usually pays for itself immediately. Animated WebP stores the differences between frames and is not limited to 256 colours, so the same animation typically lands somewhere between a half and a fifth of the GIF's size, and often looks better as well.
Why the saving is so large
A GIF is capped at 256 colours per frame and stores frames inefficiently. WebP has none of those limits and compresses inter-frame differences properly. On screen recordings and anything with gradients the difference is dramatic; on a tiny, already-optimised GIF it can be marginal, and the summary tells you honestly which happened.
Quality
The default of 80 is visually very close to the original for most content. Push it higher for gradients and subtle colour, lower it if you are chasing a size limit. Even at a low setting WebP usually beats the GIF it replaced, because it is not fighting a 256-colour palette.
Support, honestly
Every current browser displays animated WebP, and has done for years. What still lags is elsewhere: some email clients, older chat applications, a few CMS upload validators and some desktop image viewers. Check where it is going before replacing a GIF that works.
When to keep the GIF
If it is going into an email, or anywhere you cannot test. GIF's advantage is not quality or size — it is that literally everything opens it.
GIF to WebP — questions
How much smaller will it be?
Usually between a half and a fifth of the original. The result tells you the exact saving.
Is the animation kept?
Yes, with its timing and looping.
Do all browsers support animated WebP?
Every current one does. Some email clients and older desktop applications still do not.
What quality setting should I use?
80 is a good default. Raise it for gradients, lower it to hit a size limit.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is converted in your browser.
