How it works
Dividing a restaurant bill at the end of a meal is arithmetic done badly by everyone, usually in poor light. This does the three sums at once: the tip, the total, and the share each.
Customary rates vary enormously
In the United States 15–20% is expected for table service and staff wages depend on it. In much of Europe 5–10% is generous and service is often already included. In Japan tipping can cause offence. The calculator has no opinion — set whatever rate is right where you are.
Check for service already added
Many bills include a service charge, particularly for larger groups. Tipping on top of one is voluntary; tipping on the total including it means tipping on the tip.
Rounding up
The rounded figure is what each person pays if you round to a whole unit of currency, which is how most people settle a split in practice.
Tip calculator — questions
What is a normal tip?
It varies by country: 15–20% in the United States, 5–10% in much of Europe, and nothing at all in Japan.
Should I tip on the total if service is already added?
That is a judgement call, but doing so means tipping on top of a service charge.
Can it split unevenly?
No — it splits evenly. Uneven splits need a decision about who had what.
