How it works
Typing speed is one of the few skills where a number genuinely tells you something, and where a few weeks of deliberate practice produces a difference you notice every day afterwards.
How words per minute is measured
A word is counted as five characters, including spaces — the standard convention, which is why a test that counted actual words would give you a different and incomparable number. Only correctly typed characters count towards the speed, so racing ahead with mistakes does not inflate the score.
What the numbers mean
Around 40 words per minute is typical for an adult who types regularly without formal training. Touch typists generally sit between 60 and 80. Above 100 is genuinely fast and usually means years of practice. Accuracy matters more than speed: correcting mistakes costs more time than typing slowly would have.
The clock starts when you do
Timing begins on your first keystroke, not when the page loads, so there is no penalty for reading the passage first. Each character is coloured as you go — correct, wrong, or where you are now.
Nothing is recorded
No account, no leaderboard, no history. The result exists in the page and disappears when you leave, which also means you cannot cheat anyone but yourself.
Typing speed test — questions
How is words per minute calculated?
Five characters counts as one word, which is the standard measure. Only correct characters count.
What is a good typing speed?
About 40 wpm is average, 60 to 80 is a touch typist, and over 100 is genuinely fast.
Does the timer start immediately?
No. It starts on your first keystroke, so you can read the passage first.
Is my result saved?
No. Nothing is stored or uploaded.
