How it works

For the game where the dice are in the other room, or the set that is missing the d8. Standard notation, every common die, and a random source that is genuinely uniform rather than approximately so.

Standard notation

Choose how many dice and how many sides and you are rolling the usual 2d6, 1d20 or 4d8. A modifier can be added or subtracted, so 3d6+2 works as written. The notation is echoed back so you can check it matches what you meant.

Rejection sampling, and why it matters

Taking a random byte and using the remainder after division by the number of sides — the obvious approach — is subtly unfair. A byte holds 256 values, which does not divide evenly by six, so some faces come up slightly more often than others. This tool discards the values that would cause the bias and draws again, which makes every face exactly equally likely. The difference is small, but it is real, and it is the thing most online dice rollers get wrong.

Rolling several at once

Roll up to a thousand dice in one go and you get the total, the highest and lowest single die, and the average. Useful for bulk rolls, and for seeing how quickly many dice converge on their expected average while a single die does not.

FAQ

Dice roller — questions

Which dice are supported?

d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 and d100 — the standard set.

Is it fair?

Yes, and deliberately so. It uses rejection sampling to remove the bias that a plain remainder would introduce, so every face is exactly equally likely.

Can I add a modifier?

Yes. Add or subtract a number and the total includes it, with the dice sum shown separately.

How many dice can I roll at once?

Up to a thousand, with the total, highest, lowest and average reported.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once the page has loaded.
