How it works
Printing several pages to a sheet halves or quarters the paper a document uses. Print dialogs can usually do it, but the setting is buried, behaves differently on every operating system, and produces nothing you can send to someone else. This makes an actual PDF.
Layouts
Two per sheet is the handout standard and keeps text comfortably readable. Four is right for slides and for reference copies. Six and nine are for overviews and contact-sheet style printing, where you want to see the shape of a document rather than read it.
Orientation is chosen for you
Two-up and six-up turn the sheet so pages sit side by side rather than stacked, which is what makes them readable. The others keep the original orientation.
Nothing is stretched
Each page is scaled to fit its cell with its proportions intact and centred, so a mixed-size document still comes out tidy. The gap setting controls how much white space separates them.
Text stays text
Pages are embedded as pages, not rasterised, so the result stays selectable, searchable and sharp at any zoom. The file is roughly the size of the original.
Multiple pages per sheet — questions
Will the text still be selectable?
Yes. Pages are embedded as pages rather than turned into images.
Why did the sheet change orientation?
Two-up and six-up turn the sheet so pages sit side by side, which is what makes them readable.
Can I do this from the print dialog instead?
Usually, but it varies by system and produces nothing you can send on. This makes a real PDF.
Is my document uploaded?
No. It is rebuilt in your browser.
