How it works

Converting a photo to black and white, warming it up, or rescuing one that came out flat are the adjustments people want most often and the ones that need the least ceremony. A preview that updates as you drag is the whole job.

The presets

Black and white removes colour entirely. Sepia gives the warm brown of an old print. Vivid lifts saturation and contrast for pictures that came out flat. Soft does the opposite. Cool and warm shift the overall cast, which is the quickest fix for a photo shot under the wrong lighting.

The sliders

Brightness raises or lowers everything uniformly — useful for an underexposed picture, though it cannot recover detail that was never captured. Contrast increases the distance between light and dark. Saturation controls colour intensity; at zero you get black and white, which is another route to the same place.

Presets and sliders combine

A preset applies first and the sliders adjust on top, so you can pick black and white and then add contrast. Set the preset to none to work from the sliders alone.

The preview is the output

The same filter expression drives the preview and the exported file, at the picture's full resolution. Only the preview is scaled down to fit the page.

FAQ

Photo filters — questions

How do I make a photo black and white?

Choose the black and white preset, or drag saturation to zero. Both do the same thing.

Can brightness rescue a very dark photo?

Only up to a point. It lifts what was captured but cannot invent detail that the sensor never recorded.

Is the preview accurate?

Yes. The preview and the saved file are produced by the same filter expression.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything is applied in your browser.
