How it works

Long recordings run into limits: an upload cap, an attachment size, a transcription service that only takes ten minutes at a time. Splitting is the fix, and doing it to a two-hour interview by hand is nobody's idea of an afternoon.

Two ways to divide

Fixed length is what limits need — five minutes each, say, with the last piece shorter. Equal parts is for dividing a recording into a set number of roughly equal chunks, such as sides of a tape or sections of a lecture.

Each piece stands alone

Every part is a complete, playable MP3, numbered in order. Nothing needs reassembling and the sequence is unambiguous.

Cuts fall where you set them

Pieces are re-encoded rather than copied, so each starts exactly on time. Copying would snap the cuts to frame boundaries, which drifts over a long file.

Limits

Up to twenty pieces at a time, and the file's length has to be readable by your browser — which is true of MP3, WAV, M4A and OGG, and not always of more obscure formats.
