How it works

Reversing sound is one of those things that is trivial in a studio and strangely hard to find online without an upload. It is used for backmasking, for reversed cymbal swells before a drop, for sound design, and quite often just out of curiosity about what a particular record sounds like the other way round.

How it works

Every sample in the track is played in the opposite order. Nothing is added or removed, so reversing a reversed file gives you back the original almost exactly — the only losses come from re-encoding to a lossy format.

Pick WAV if you are going to edit it

MP3 and M4A are lossy, so each pass through them throws away a little detail. If this is a step in a larger piece of work, take the WAV: it is much bigger but bit-for-bit faithful, and you can compress it once at the end.

Why long files can fail

Reversing needs the whole track in memory at once — you cannot start writing the end until you have read it. A few minutes is comfortable on any device; an hour-long podcast may exhaust a phone. Split it first if that happens.

Video works too

Drop a video in and the soundtrack is extracted and reversed. You get an audio file back, not a video — to reverse the picture as well, use the reverse video tool.

FAQ

Reverse audio — questions

Does reversing lose quality?

The reversal itself is exact. Any loss comes from re-encoding to MP3 or M4A, which is why WAV is offered.

Can I reverse a video's picture too?

Not here — this gives you the audio. The reverse video tool handles the picture.

Why did a long file fail?

The whole track has to be held in memory to reverse it. Split long recordings into parts first.

Does it work with video files?

Yes. The soundtrack is pulled out and reversed, and you get an audio file back.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Everything happens on your device.
