Resize a GIF
Make an animated GIF smaller without losing the animation. It never leaves your device.
- Runs on your device — the file is never sent anywhere
- No sign-up, no watermarks, no daily quotas
- Free, with no limit on how often you use it
How it works
GIFs get too big faster than anything else, because the format stores whole frames rather than the differences between them. Most places that accept a GIF have a size limit, and the quickest way under it is to make the picture smaller. Resizing one normally breaks the animation and leaves a single still frame; this keeps it moving.
Why resizing helps so much
A GIF's size is roughly proportional to its pixel count multiplied by its frame count. Halving the width therefore removes about three quarters of the data, which is a far bigger saving than any amount of fiddling with quality. It is nearly always the first thing to try.
Frame rate as a second lever
If the width alone is not enough, capping the frame rate drops frames outright and is the next most effective change. Going from 25 frames per second to 10 removes well over half the data, and for a screen recording or a reaction clip it is rarely noticeable.
An honest caveat about file size
Re-encoding a GIF rebuilds its colour palette from scratch, and occasionally the new palette costs more than the resize saves — particularly with a small GIF that was already well optimised. When that happens the tool tells you the file did not get smaller rather than quietly handing you a larger one.
The animation is preserved
Frame timing, frame count and looping all survive. Only the dimensions, and the frame rate if you cap it, change.
Resize a GIF — questions
Does the animation survive?
Yes. Every frame and its timing is kept — that is the point of the tool.
Can I make a GIF larger?
You can, but enlarging a GIF makes it blurry and much heavier, so it is rarely worth doing.
Why did my file not get smaller?
Re-encoding rebuilds the colour palette, which can cost more than the resize saves on an already-optimised GIF. The tool tells you when that happens instead of hiding it.
Is there a watermark?
No watermark, no sign-up, no quota.
Is the GIF uploaded?
No. It is processed on your device.
