Video converter
Convert and extract audio from video entirely on your own machine.
About video conversion
Video is where running locally is most obviously worth it: a one-gigabyte file that would take an age to upload and download starts converting the moment you drop it in. The engine is ffmpeg, compiled to WebAssembly and running on your own CPU.
Expect it to take real time
The engine uses a single CPU core. On a desktop, converting video takes roughly as long as the clip itself; on an older phone it can be ten to twenty times longer. Extracting an audio track is much quicker, because the video stream is discarded rather than re-encoded.
Containers versus codecs
MP4, MKV and MOV are containers — boxes that hold a video stream and an audio stream. Two files with the same extension can hold entirely different codecs inside, which is why a straight rename never works and a real conversion is needed.
GIF is not a video format
Animated GIF has almost no compression between frames, so a clip that is a few megabytes as MP4 can become hundreds of megabytes as GIF. Conversions here are capped at the first 30 seconds and scaled to 480 pixels wide to keep the result usable.
Video questions
Is this video converter free?
Yes — no accounts, no daily quotas, no watermarks and no paid tier.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Every conversion on this page runs inside your own browser, so the file is never transmitted to us or to anyone else.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Everything runs in the page using your browser's own capabilities and open-source engines compiled to WebAssembly.
