Audio converter
Convert between lossless and compressed audio without uploading your library.
About audio conversion
Audio files are small enough that conversion is quick even on modest hardware, and the whole job happens in the page. Useful when a device refuses a format, or when a lossless archive needs a portable copy.
Lossless and lossy are different jobs
FLAC and WAV keep every sample: FLAC compresses losslessly to roughly half the size, WAV compresses not at all. MP3, AAC and Vorbis discard detail to get much smaller files. Going lossy to lossless never restores anything — it only stops further loss.
Transcoding costs you twice
Converting MP3 to OGG, or M4A to MP3, decodes audio that has already been through one lossy encoder and puts it through another. Each pass compounds. Where you still have the original WAV or FLAC, encode from that instead.
Why MP3 is still the default
Better codecs exist, but MP3 plays on essentially every device ever made, and its patents expired in 2017. This site encodes MP3 at 192 kbps with LAME, a setting most listeners cannot distinguish from the source on ordinary equipment.
